KUWAIT: In a landmark step for academic collaboration between Kuwait and Egypt in the field of theatrical studies, Dr Nermin Al-Houti, Associate Professor in the Department of Criticism and Theater Literature at Kuwait’s Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts, was selected as an external discussant on the doctoral evaluation committee at Egypt’s Academy of Arts.
Al-Houti took part in the discussion and evaluation of a doctoral thesis by researcher Essam Abdelmomen Sayed Mohamed, submitted to the Department of Art Criticism at the Higher Institute of Art Criticism, titled “Intellectual and Artistic Issues in the Theater of Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Faqih 1970–1990.” The committee was chaired by Prof Mohamed Zaimah, who also served as supervisor and rapporteur, alongside Prof Fawzi Omar Salem (co-supervisor and discussant), Prof Shawkat Al-Masri (internal discussant), and Prof Al-Houti as external discussant, in line with the decision of the Vice President of the Academy of Arts issued on August 17, 2025.
With her appointment, Dr Al-Houti became the first Kuwaiti from the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts to serve on such a prestigious academic committee formed by Egypt’s Academy of Arts, marking a new chapter in cultural and educational exchange between the two countries.
Founded in 1959 by Egypt’s Ministry of Culture, the Academy of Arts is regarded as a leading higher education institution specializing in expressive arts. Its mission is to raise artistic standards, preserve Arab cultural heritage, and strengthen both local and international ties. Today, the academy encompasses seven institutes: the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, the Higher Conservatory, the Higher Institute of Ballet, the Higher Institute of Cinema, the Higher Institute of Arabic Music, the Higher Institute of Art Criticism, and the Higher Institute of Folk Arts.
