Nermin al-Houti becomes first Kuwaiti to join Egyptian doctoral dissertation committee

In a landmark academic collaboration, author Nermin al-Houti has become the first Kuwaiti woman to join a doctoral dissertation committee at Egypt’s Academy of Arts.

The academy selected al-Houti, an associate professor in the Department of Theater Criticism and Literature at Kuwait’s Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, to serve as an “external examiner” for the first-ever academic cooperation between the two institutions.

She was part of the committee to evaluate a doctoral dissertation by scholar Essam Abdel Mo’men Sayyid Mohamed from the Higher Institute of Art Criticism.

The dissertation’s topic was “Intellectual and Artistic Issues in the Theater of Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Faqih 1970-1990.”

The committee included: Professor Mohamed Za’ima (supervisor, examiner, and rapporteur), Professor Fawzi Omar Salem (co-supervisor and examiner), Assistant Professor Shawkat Al-Masri (internal examiner), and Professor Nermin Al-Houti (external examiner).

The appointment was made official by the Academy’s Vice President in decision #91, issued on August 17.

By being chosen for the dissertation committee, al-Houti is now the first Kuwaiti from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts to participate in such a prestigious academic committee formed by Egypt’s Academy of Arts.

 Academy of Arts
The Egyptian Ministry of Culture founded the Academy of Arts in 1959 as a higher education institution specializing in expressive arts.

Its goal was to elevate standards of art, direct it toward a nationalistic path to preserve Arab heritage, and strengthen local and global ties.

The academy began with three institutes (Cinema, Music, and Ballet) and has since expanded its mission, now encompassing seven higher institutes that train artists in the expressive arts.

Its institutes include the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, the Higher Institute of Conservatoire, the Higher Institute of Ballet, the Higher Institute of Cinema, the Higher Institute of Arabic Music, the Higher Institute of Art Criticism, and the Higher Institute of Folk Arts.
